Jokkmokk
January 28th - February 9th 2013
A fortnight in Arctic Sweden.
For full trip report visit my “Ice Raven” site.
The Winter Market at Jokkmokk is somewhere I have wanted to visit since I first heard of it’s existence a good few years ago.
It’s one of the highlights of the Saami calendar and a chance for the community to gather together as they have here for hundreds of years.
It used to be a time when reindeer were sold and marriages arranged but although these things may still happen, the market has also become a place to find the finest Saami craftsmanship.
Of course, with temperatures regularly falling to -30°c or lower it is not for the faint hearted, especially if you intend to camp as we did for part of the trip.
