Plover Scar

9th September 2014

I’ve known the River Lune all my life. My Father’s family came from Westmoreland and settled at Tebay and we spent most of our family holidays at the banks of this river.

It’s amazing to me then that I have only just discovered Plover Scar Light at the mouth of the Lune where it enters Morecambe bay.

To give myself a bit of a break I would have to admit that it’s in a bit of a backwater.

It’s not the sort of place you find by accident. It’s on a dead end road that leads to a caravan park and not much else unless it is one of the farms along the way.

The other feature here is the ruinous remains of the 12th century Cockersand Abbey which fell foul of Henry the 8th of course.

Not much survives I’m afraid apart from a chapter house that was used as a mausoleum in the 18th and 19th centuries.

I suspect some of it’s stone was used to build the farm house near by but even that look to be in poor repair these days.

A lonely but interesting location that I will probably visit again.
