Tandlewood
Lancashire.
6th January 2004
So, I’m looking at this compact digital camera with different eyes. I’m wondering if it will produce work like I used to make in the darkroom. Time to experiment.
Tandlewood is beautiful beech wood in part of a local park where I often take Skadi, our dog, for her walks.
I’d admired these old beech trees many times before but never bothered to lump my Broni up there to take a picture. What interests me now looking back on this picture is that I was still thinking in terms of monochrome for “serious” photography as that is what I had mostly produced in the darkroom. I also did a lot of toning of prints as well so it was natural for me to think in that way.
I had often thought that the way the branches twist together gave a slightly sinister air to these trees and the toning adds to the unearthly feel.
The ability to take control of my pictures in software just like I had in the darkroom was very interesting and after a long absence I think was actually starting to enjoy my photography again.
